Fear Makes Bad Predictions

Why 91% of what you’re scared of never happens — and how to stop letting anxiety drive.

This week, I wanted to share a clip from my interview with my sister and psychologist, Dr. Hotmer. It’s one of my favorite conversations we’ve ever had on Thought Experiment Called Life.

In the full episode, we explore a wide range of topics: neurodivergence, self-acceptance, following the quiet nudges of your dreams, and tools for the sensitive soul. It’s one of those episodes where you can drop the pin anywhere and find something meaningful. If you’re short on time, pick a moment and hit play. If you want a full reset, settle in for the whole thing.

This particular clip stuck with me because Dr. Hotmer highlights a truth we all think we know… but rarely act on:

Most of the things we stress about never come true.

Our brains are storytelling machines…beautiful, creative, and sometimes wildly dramatic in their attempts to “protect” us. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy talks about how our minds build these elaborate fear-stories to keep us from stepping over the hurdles in front of us. And yet, when we finally take the step, we almost always look back and realize…

Oh. That wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought.

It makes me wonder:
What would shift if we used our imaginations to tell better stories?
Not the fear-soaked ones we inherited from society, or from years of watching other people shrink themselves…
but stories rooted in possibility, love, courage, and truth?

What if our imaginations became tools for expansion instead of contraction?
What if the voice in our head wasn’t warning us… but cheering us on?

Just something to sit with this weekend. ✨

If you’re craving a moment of calm, Dr. Hotmer also has a YouTube channel filled with short, sweet guided meditations…little two-minute resets that fit into any schedule. Truly worth checking out.

I can’t wait to share a new interview and episode with you this Tuesday.
Wishing you a beautiful, grounded, imaginative weekend. 💛
